Medicare Part D is a federal voluntary program that financially supports costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries; the program became effective on January 1st, 2006. Medicare part D is an outpatient prescription drug benefit administered by private insurance companies. The standard Medicare Part D drug plan provides coverage in which beneficiaries are responsible for paying a certain share of cost for prescription drugs. Premiums and medications that are covered vary, as well as the amounts that are charged for prescriptions. A challenge of the Department of Mental Health had been the lack of enrollment among those clients eligible for Medicare Part D. Without a system to identify eligible clients for this program, the County had been utilizing funds to cover these prescription costs.
