Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

In today’s technology-driven world, local governments strive to find new and innovative ways to utilize technology to improve services, public transparency, and staff efficiencies. In Michigan, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) has been a part of local government for many years. However, there is a difference in simply having a GIS program and utilizing GIS in creative ways.In Midland County, the GIS program started in 2006 with an aerial imagery flight and hiring of a GIS Coordinator. Over the course of 12 years, the GIS program has created many great datasets, as well as interesting and helpful mapping products. Since 2017, the GIS program has significantly expanded, partly due to the increased use of mobile mapping technology. The Midland County GIS Department has assisted several County Departments with mobile-based data development and maps that provide efficiency, cost savings, and easier public access to information. This submission is for the GIS program in Midland County, focusing on web and mobile solutions created for several different County departments since 2018.
