In April of 2007 and 2008, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency hosted the Homeless Veterans Stand Down, a one-day event to promote self-sustainment for homeless veterans. Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency in coordination with thirty-four agencies from the federal, state, county, and nonprofit levels, provides a host of much needed services for homeless and in-need veterans. Services available at the Stand Down events include access to temporary shelter, showers, haircuts, meals, clothing, hygiene kits, medical examinations, immunizations, legal advice, training program information, benefits counseling, employment services, and referral to other supportive services. These critical services are often the catalyst that enables homeless veterans to reenter mainstream society.
