San Diego County’s January 2010 homeless county indicates that 8,574 persons are homeless in San Diego County. A total of 10,400 persons spent at least one night in and emergency shelter or transitional housing program. Approximately two-thirds (64.5percent) were individuals and one third (35.5 percent) were persons in families. It is estimated that three in four children in these families are of elementary-school age. Through its innovative partnership with the San Diego County Office of education, and the county Housing Authority, the Department of Housing and Community Development designed a Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) that addresses the needs of local school districts that serve families with housing subsidies. The program stabilized 137 families and ensured that 257 children remained in school.
