Alachua County is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all of its citizens. By providing services to our most vulnerable residents experiencing homelessness and housing instability, the County’s goal is to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable, permanent housing. This provides a higher support level to those at risk. Traditionally, homeless services have been delivered on a first-come, first-served basis. This can be very challenging when attempting to prioritize to those most in need. In general, these services were reactionary versus proactive, had financial limits, and tended to be hard to navigate. Citizens had to request assistance from multiple providers to meet a singular need. Until September 2015, Alachua County Division of Social Services offered homeless prevention services strictly by appointment or through bi-weekly mandatory orientation sessions. This limited access created a challenge for applicants, as it took them away from work and created barriers for those who had limited/no transportation or mobility issues. Individuals living in rural parts of the County reported feeling excluded from services. Additionally, the high volume of applicants created a backlog of residents needing assistance. On October 1, 2015, Alachua County Division of Social Services implemented Homeless Prevention and Move-In Services, which specifically prioritizes need and closes the gap for those residents who require minimal intervention in order to obtain and sustain permanent and affordable housing. The modification of processes has resulted in improved accessibility, prioritization of the target population, and enhanced collaboration amongst providers.
