About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

A partnership between the Montgomery Floyd Regional Library, a medical college and a coalition of museums will transform a traveling Harry Potter exhibition into learning opportunities for people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic standing in Montgomery County’s Appalachian community. The exhibition will provide the catalyst for hands-on activities created by the local partners to help the community learn more about science, history and medicine, while also promoting reading for lifelong learning. The program, “Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine,” provided by the National Library of Medicine, will travel to southwest Virginia from July 11 to August 21, 2010. The Montgomery Floyd Regional Library also has two additional partners in order to ensure the success of the event. These include the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the New River Heritage coalition. With the teamwork of these organizations, Montgomery County expects to see an increased awareness in the role of libraries and museums in rural southwest Virginia.
