GovDelivery is a means for the county government to communicate efficiently with citizens and visitors. The use of GovDelivery for traffic incident alerts in Macomb County was launched on May 18, 2015 and enables the Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) Traffic Operations Center (TOC) to provide immediate traffic incident alerts to the public in a variety of media formats through one action. The public users can customize preferences to receive the alerts in their desired format (text or email). Prior to the deployment of the GovDelivery incident alert service, Macomb County motorists relied on radio and television broadcasts for traffic updates. In many cases, the information was found to be late and incomplete. Since its deployment, the County has used the GovDelivery incident alert service to provide more than 700 users with more than 1,600 notifications when one or more lanes of traffic are impacted. The GovDelivery incident alert service is a one-of-a-kind service provided for incidents that happen primarily on non-freeway type roadways. It is multi-platform capable and can notify motorists via text, email, Facebook and Twitter, thereby reaching thousands more motorists than the 700+ subscribers. Positive feedback has recently led the TOC to expand its coverage area. On February 20, 2017, the TOC increased their scope of coverage to include I-696 and I-94 freeways within the limits of Macomb County. The GovDelivery incident alert service registration is simple, and makes complete and reliable Macomb County traffic information only a click away, ultimately enabling motorists to more effectively plan their routes. MCDR’s GovDelivery incident alert service is continuously enhancing relationships with the motoring public.
