About the Program

Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2013

The Hennepin County GIS Data Warehouse was developed to provide a centralized location for County GIS users to access and share GIS data. The warehouse was designed to be simple to use and easy to understand. The warehouse adds value to the organization by reducing duplicated geospatial data across the organization; encouraging geospatial data sharing across business lines; fostering coordinated ventures for geospatial data collection between business lines; increasing the accuracy, timeliness and completeness of the County’s geospatial data by requiring a high level of data integrity. Implementation of the GIS Data Warehouse included establishing data stewardship, well-defined roles, documented and diagramed processes, and standards. A GIS Data Standards committee was also formed to monitor and maintain the geospatial data standards across the County. Results in the first few months include the GIS Data Warehouse is on pace to be accessed by the public, through public facing GIS applications, more than 1 million times in 2013; weekly unique user connections have increased 400%; registered users have increased 113%; available datasets have increased 53%. The standards and best practices established from this project have already been made available to the State of Minnesota and other counties throughout the state.
