About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2009

Get Set, Get Ready, Let’s Read! focuses on building early literacy skills in children from birth to five years old by brining high quality books and proven book-sharing techniques to Durham County’s child care homes and centers. An Early Literacy Specialist from Durham County Library’s Youth Services Division visits 15 in-home childcares with star ratings of 1 or 2 on a bi-weekly basis providing a complete story time for up to one-hour. During the story hour, the Early Literacy Specialist focuses on one or more of the six early literacy skills from the national program Every Child Ready to Read at Your Library: Narrative Skills, Print Motivation, Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Vocabulary, and Print Awareness. The Early Literacy Specialist also brings a new selection of books monthly to each facility. Childcare providers participate in the program for six months, and are offered two continuing education credits. The library hopes that participating in the program will help providers increase their star rating.
