The Los Angeles Countyâs Civic Art collection is comprised of over 400 contemporary and historic permanent public artworks located across County-owned property. These artworks are cultural assets that belong to and are enjoyed by all Los Angeles County residents. The largest historic public artwork in the Civic Art Collection is the Fort Moore Memorial, located just north of downtown Los Angeles. The Fort Moore Memorial was built in 1957 and includes large bas-reliefs of scenes depicting the modern development of Los Angeles and an 80-foot waterfall fountain. It was also a site that had fallen into disrepair over its lifetime. In an impressive four-year-long collaborative effort, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Civic Art Division worked to repair and restore the site, its artistic elements, and waterfall. The project also included engagement with the communities of Los Angeles County through the collection of items for a time capsule, which reflected what residents and community organizations wanted the future to know about their present Los Angeles County.
