About the Program

Category: Parks and Recreation (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

Food, Fun, Fitness and Fundamentals was a program sponsored by Montgomery County Recreation to provide a summer camp experience for children from low income areas of the county. It also provided quality day care, meals and snacks and academic support for the campers. The program grew out of a 2015 camp: Food, Fun and Fitness, also started to meet the needs of children of low income households. That program was half day and did not have an academic component nor did it have one of the most fun and useful activities of the 2016 expanded program, swimming, which was new to the program in 2016. Food, Fun Fitness and Fundamentals offered a free, full day, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., program five days a week for six weeks. One hundred fifty elementary-age students enrolled. Montgomery County Recreation partnered with Adventist Community Health Care in providing academic enrichment. Parents were encouraged to engage with the camp by attending an orientation meeting prior to the start of camp, an evaluation meeting at the midway point of the summer and a special program on the last day at which they were encouraged to share their thoughts about the success of the program.
