Miami-Dade County (County) services a population of approximately 2.761 million residents through 25 departments that provide various municipal services with a budgeted staff of approximately 27,593 positions. In order to ensure the delivery of services over 2,431 square miles, of which 1,898 square miles is on land, the County's Internal Services (ISD) maintains approximately 12,000 vehicle assets.Of the approximately 12,000 vehicles deployed throughout the County, approximately 40% are over 10 years of age (4,680 vehicles) and 21% are over 100,000 odometer miles (2,520 vehicles.) As such, many of these vehicles have exceeded their lifecycle and require replacements to avoid higher maintenance costs, limited parts availability, and reduction in operational reliability of the said vehicles which can impact service delivery of the respective departments. However, the simple funding of replacement needs is insufficient to ensure an optimal fleet operation. ISD has developed an automated Fleet Utilization Report which allows users to view an up-to-date snapshot of their respective department’s fleet metrics such as inventory, aging, annual miles driven, recommended vehicle replacements, and potential vehicles identified as ‘underutilizations.’ Utilizing this report, departments can strategically monitor, redeploy, and develop long term replacement plans for their respective fleets. Additionally, the County can yield savings through proactive management of potentially underutilized assets through replacement deferrals or vehicle reductions.
