Research indicates that nearly half of all children spend some or part of their formative years apart from one or both parents. More often than not, the parent who does not live in the home is the father. The absence of a father in the home has a marked impact on families in parent-child engagement attachment, education, finances, and on a child’s sense of self. The Family Support Program’s Fatherhood Initiative was created to assist non-custodial parents by removing barriers to education, employment and training resources. The goal is to increase the opportunities for the noncustodial father to visit and support his children financially. Research suggest that when fathers are involved with children, they have increased success in school, a healthier self-esteem, a greater ability to display empathy, and more positive outcomes in social behavior than that of their counterparts.
