In North Carolina, elections are a function of the state but locally administered. Each county has a local Board of Elections, but that elections staff does not always include technology staff. In Cabarrus County, the Cabarrus County Information Technology Services department (ITS) supports the technology needs. The amount of support required to administer a successful election has grown in the last few years. The introduction of digital poll books and remote early voting locations has created a large technology footprint to support. Cabarrus County Information Technology strives to bring innovation to every department we serve and the Board of Elections provided a unique opportunity to implement technology and concentrated IT staff during this past election. ITS provided multi-factor authentication for one stop early voting, full IT support for polling site opening, and an iPad app to improve communication to the polling sites. ITS successfully used collaboration and innovation to solve problems without spending extra dollars.
