Dust originating from use and management of unstable or disturbed dirt surfaces can negatively impact Maricopa County’s compliance with the particulate matter air quality standard. Though Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) Air Pollution Control rules establish dust control measures that must be met by the regulated community, designing effective education and outreach tools for the community is key to improving the air that citizens breathe each day. MCAQD partnered with cities and towns throughout the county to develop educational community outreach videos that focus on four particularly challenging dust causing activities: • Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) • Weed Abatement • Commercial Ballooning • Unpaved Parking Lots Each video depicts real-world examples to show how these activities (if not properly managed) can result in excess dust, and how land owners and/or participants in these activities can conduct these activities while minimizing their impact on air quality.
