Eco-Employee Program

2011 NACo Achievement Award Winner

Maricopa County, Ariz., AZ

About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors recognizes that in order to develop a more sustainable place, a culture must be created to embrace this vital concept. A key component to establishing a culture shift for residents of Maricopa County must begin internally with government leading the charge. Because of this fundamental truth, the Green Government Program has developed the Eco-Employee Program. The Eco-Employee is an employee of Maricopa County that earns this annual recognition by demonstrating substantial leadership in furthering Maricopa County’s vision towards regional sustainability. This individual has done or is doing something that creates a better place for Maricopa County employees to work or residents to live. This employee stands above the others for his or her commitment to sharing and promoting the County’s collective responsibility for the well being of the community. Some examples of award winners’ activities include using innovative modes of transportation to get to and from work, aggressive recycling efforts, and using solar power to help power a green house. The green efforts to earn this recognition are not confined to work, because all decisions have regional impacts.
