In partnership with a local nonprofit, SCARCE, DuPage County’s Stormwater Management Department developed a countywide Water Quality Flag program to award institutions who have gone above in beyond in preserving and protecting DuPage’s local waterways. Following a series of trainings and hands-on activities, DuPage County organizations, including schools, park districts, libraries and others can earn the flag to display at their establishment. To date, 21 institutions have earned the flag with another 11 actively working toward it.Although the Water Quality Flag program and the design of the flag itself – depicting DuPage County’s major watershed – are unique to the County, the program is cost-effective, replicable and proven for use in other counties.
