Year: 2016

While there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in South Florida’s beautiful weather, flying a drone near an airport is not one of them. Recreational drone use has exponentially increased over the last few years. Many users don’t realize the gravity of flying a drone near an airport, let alone the catastrophic damage it can cause not only to an aircraft, but most importantly to passenger safety. To prevent any disaster and to uphold the highest safety standards, Miami International Airport (MIA) pioneered efforts to partner with Miami-Dade County Commissioners and craft legislation to prohibit drone usage within the proximity of an airport in Miami. MIA’s launch of the Drone Awareness Campaign in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reflects its commitment to the safety of its 44 million passengers that travel through the airport each year. Florida Senator Bill Nelson and Commissioner Rebecca Sosa also joined our campaign.
