About the Program

Year: 2010
Chesterfield County has a fleet of approximately 1,500 vehicles which presents a constant risk of collisions involving a county employee. The Chesterfield County Driver Safety Program provides employees several ways to help them become more aware of the hazards of driving. The driving program also provides Chesterfield County with means to manage to risk of a large fleet. Proactive programs include the pre-employment DMV checks, signed DMV authorizations, DMV Voluntary Monitoring program and the defensive driving class. This class is a requirement for an employee who wants to become an authorized driver. The reactive elements of the program are the Vehicle Collision Review Board, the remedial hands-on driver training, the Courteous Driver Program and driver surveillance. Each reactive component requires some type of investigation based on an internal or external complaint. The entire program took several years to develop based on prioritized county needs. Once a need was identified, Risk Management, the Safety and Health Steering Committee and the Vehicle Collision Review Board worked together to address each need until a program was implemented that encompassed all aspects of a good driving safety program.
