The primary goal for designing a user-friendly web application that would serve all sections of the department was to link all departmental records, electronic documents, and static zoning maps to a spatial (geographic) component. By combining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) and Relation Database Management System (RDBMS) technologies, a web application was created where staff could access “one” application for viewing/analyzing all types of departmental and County records. As a result, the previous legacy approach, where users had to navigate and change multiple screens/systems in search of information has now been replaced with the use of one integrated and comprehensive application. The application has been developed using the “latest” GIS technologies and programming languages for the web, in order to take advantage of the portable nature of the internet, where only an internet browser is required to view the application. Now, a user can analyze and retrieve departmental data without having to use specialized GIS software.
