About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

In recent years, Los Angeles County has experienced a steady increase in Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Young African-American and Latina women in Central and South Los Angeles have been particularly impacted by these sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In an effort to combat the striking disparities in STD morbidity among young women of color in Los Angeles County, in June of 2009, the STD Program launched an innovative, online STD testing program promoted by a large-scale social marketing campaign. The design of this program incorporates best practices from e-commerce allowing young women to order a home test kit for Chlamydia and gonorrhea and obtain their test results online. This project benefits the public because it is likely that many young women of color in high STD morbidity areas are being reached who might not otherwise have tested.
