About the Program

Category: Children and Youth (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

Developed by Maricopa County’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Phoenix Zoo, the Desert Critter Scene Investigators Program aims at reintroducing youth back into nature and familiarizing them with local wildlife. The concept behind the Desert C.S.I. Program is that desert animals leave behind special clues, and by carefully investigating these clues, youth can identify the type of animal and its survival skills. The program begins with a live animal presentation, providing children with the opportunity to pet and admire a native animal. Next, participants are divided into small groups and led by an interpretive ranger to a trail. Along the trail are eight stations containing animal clues such as tracks, nests or burrows where rangers can engage the youth in discussions about Sonoran desert animals. This program teaches the youth how to identify animals, develops nature-based observational skills and forms personal connections with the Sonoran desert. Utilizing electronic newsletters and marketing efforts on the internet, the Desert C.S.I. Program has been successful at attracting youth to wildlife areas and increasing their interest in the surrounding environment.
