About the Program

Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

In an effort to meet the placement and treatment needs of children/youth under its supervision, Los Angeles County’s Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) regularly issues requests to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for background checks of persons who reside in the home where a child/youth may be placed. Requests for these background checks would take several days to complete. In an effort to reduce delays, DCFS began department-wide implementation of its developed Automated California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) Process. This platform increased the number of CLETS clearances and allowed Children’s Social Workers (CSWs) to create digital requests by inputting an applicant’s name and date of birth. Implementation of the Automated CLETS Process expedited processing for criminal background checks. As a result of the implementation, the wait time for background check results has been reduced from an average of two weeks to an hour or less. Also, the 500 per day cap for the number of CLETS checks processed by DOJ prior to implementation has been changed to unlimited. DCFS is pleased to share that through implementation of the Automated CLETS Process, the needs of clients are more expeditiously and appropriately addressed.
