Category: Planning (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

The segregated structure of code enforcement inhibits responders ability to respond with multiple and coordinated efforts to issues such as overcrowding, hoarding, structure alignment and other problems. After utilizing experiences from numerous task force operations, benchmarking other agencies nationwide, and observing the successes of the County’s Enhanced Code Enforcement Strike Team, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the consolidation of multiple code enforcement functions into a new agency. The Department of Code Compliance (DCC) began operations on July 1, 2010 and embarked on a path to respond with multiple and coordinated efforts to complaints and code violations in a ‘one-stop shop’ approach by enhancing customer service and intake processes, cross-training technical staff to promote code efficiencies, improve collaboration with numerous sister agencies and promote code compliance in the community by outreach and education. As a result, codes have been more strictly enforced with positive community feedback.
