Placer County’s Adult System of Care (ASOC) provides outpatient services to consumers with severe mental illness who often struggle with basic needs such as adequate housing, social supports, healthcare services and stable income. ASOC offers an array of mental health services, ranging from outpatient to inpatient treatment. The Clinic Services team - comprised of 12 mental health professionals and one Peer Advocate (a person with lived experience) - provides assessments, crisis services, individual and group therapy, housing assistance, integrated care coordination and linkage to community resources. This team is also the primary intake avenue for those looking for care. It has long been known that early intervention is critical to helping those who struggle with mental illness recover more quickly. According to several studies, including one recently published by The Mental Health Education Resource Center (2017), “Early intervention reduces the rate of relapse, reduces vocational disruption, reduces the need for hospitalization, reduces family disruption and distress, lowers risk of suicide, and relates to better attitudes towards treatment providers”. In alignment with this philosophy, Placer County has reinvented itself. ASOC replaced an antiquated telephone-based admission process to a drop-in model that improves access to care and reduces unnecessary impediments to treatment.
