Cities and Towns Acquisition Assistance Program

2012 NACo Achievement Award Winner

Maricopa County, Ariz., AZ

About the Program

Category: Transportation (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

Maricopa County has initiated an Acquisition Assistance program to assist cities and towns in the construction of needed roadway projects where roadways are adjacent to or are partially in unincorporated areas known as “County Islands”. The County, by offering Acquisition Assistance, participates in city and town sponsored and funded projects that will help resolve traffic congestion and remove bottlenecks caused by leapfrogged development. Maricopa County’s participation in these projects is cost-effective since it is limited to reimbursable labor costs and not to the expenditure of construction monies. This assistance allows both the County and the cities and towns to stretch their dollars by participating in more projects, in particular on projects where the County would have a minority interest and participation with construction monies would not be cost-effective or be identified as a prioritization for expenditure in the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s Transportation Improvement Program.
