Westchester County, N.Y., NY

About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

In anticipation of new Federal and State EPA guidelines, Westchester County’s “Carbon Footprint and Emissions Reduction Program” was instituted to track and reduce greenhouse gas and particulate emissions from its motor vehicle fleet and off-road vehicles and equipment. These reductions are being achieved through the purchase and introduction of advanced technology gasoline vehicles to replace conventional fueled vehicles, GPS vehicle tracking systems for carbon footprint applications and Diesel Oxidation Catalytic Converters for its diesel vehicles and equipment. Carbon footprint assessment is being used to show the efficacy of replacing its motor pool vehicles with gas/electric hybrids and the effectiveness of its gas tracking system.
