Orangeburg County is becoming one of the fastest growing areas of the state and will soon benefit from a major employment project that involves an inland port, new interstate access and an estimated work force of 10,000 people over a five year period. The lack of a trained workforce, along with the inability of workers to get to educational opportunities and to the jobs themselves due to a lack of transportation was the inspiration for the development of this project. On September 16, 2009, elected officials and residents came together to open the new service. The outpour of attendees certainly indicated the tremendous need for this project by the strong community support. This Cross County Connection project will provide a service to all residents of the county along with services to the four major educational institutions in the area. The impact of this project to the area will be significant and will provide services to those persons who have missed educational and work opportunities in the past. Generally, these are persons who are not eligible for transit services from Medicaid and similar programs and do not otherwise have access to public transit.
