About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

In 2008, as part of the York County “Go Green” program, the York County Department of General Services began converting substantial areas of maintainable turf lawn in parks and along highways into low-maintenance, wildflower management areas and bird sanctuaries. Development of these areas relied extensively on partnerships with local citizen groups and organizations. In addition to saving on future maintenance costs, these Wildlife Management Areas located at their parks and along the highways provide the citizens with opportunities for outdoor recreation as well as an outreach program for the County to educate and inform the public about their “green efforts’ and dedication to protecting the environment.
