Category: Parks and Recreation (Best in Category)

Year: 2014

Launched in early 2013, Bike305 is an initiative by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to encourage residents to ride bicycles for healthier lifestyles, an alternative means of commuting, and experiencing the miles of safe & connected bike trails and paths throughout the County. Bike305 was launched in 2013 with 6 municipalities partnering with the County. In 2014, the number of municipalities increased to 15. A dozen community-based organizations, focused on bicycling as an activity and/or alternative means of transportation, joined the movement. Rounding out the mix, child bike-safety & cycling groups came on board, assisting the municipalities with their bike-friendly festivals, farmers markets, events and community rides. Program sponsors helped supply collateral for community outreach while incentivizing residents to show up on a bicycle for discounts and special deals. Since its inception, Bike305 implemented 12 new bike-friendly events and a half dozen monthly and weekly community bike rides where spurred on by the Bike305 movement.
