Beltrami Works! Program was developed in 2009 in response to Beltrami County Administration realizing they should do more to support people living in poverty to become financially stable. Inspiration for the program was designed around the thinking that Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) participants need positive relationships and a belief in a better future by achieving goals. The program begins with an intensive workshop series developed on a coaching model. Workshops are facilitated for students to identify their values, strengths, and skills to support them as they set their goals. After the workshops, students have one-on-one coaching opportunities, and monthly community meetings. Students choose their level of involvement. An emphasis in collaborative partnerships streamlines access to resources. Goals include choosing career or education paths suited to the individual’s interests, values, and strengths. In 2011, the program worked with 74 people. 21 closed their MFIP grant, 30 are employed, 15 had gains in education including earning their GED, or enrolling in a degree program, 14 became healthier mainly through sobriety, and/or managing mental health issues, 5 removed themselves from abusive relationships, and 5 improved their housing. At least $55,000 less in cash grants were accessed.
