There has been no formal backyard chicken ordinance in Charlotte County in non-agricultural residential settings, just complaint-based enforcement. In 2016, there was a chance of the ordinance coming into existence and Extension prepared by developing a two-hour workshop. This ordinance attempt failed, but in 2020 new interest developed in the community and the County Commission held workshops on this issue. UF/IFAS Extension Services was asked to provide input into the ordinance development and upon enactment was tasked to provide a mandated education course for program participation. Extension developed a canvas course for online use complete with a quiz and a certificate of completion. As a result, UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County provided a solution to better serve the community with this convenient, on-line option. We will be able to obtain some course completion date in 2021.
