In September 2009, the Alameda County Public Health Department launched its Life Course Initiative in light of stark health inequities in Alameda County and increasing evidence demonstrating adverse lifelong impacts of disadvantage during early life. This initiative has an internal systems change committee and an external partnership called the Building Blocks Collaborative. This initiative has resulted in increased collaboration, coordination of activities, and existing resources, the Life Course Initiative lays the groundwork to improve conditions for the 7,000 infants born in poverty each year in Alameda County.
