About the Program

Category: Risk and Emergency Management (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

Fairfax County has installed nearly 500 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in parks, government facilities, and public buildings through the County. To facilitate management of its Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program, the County designed and implemented a web-based information management system named AEDcheck. AEDcheck allows for continuous oversight of installed equipment at over 260 geographically dispersed sites. Each site has at least one point of contact and multiple trained staff. While the PAD program makes it possible for any individual to be a life-saving responder, having trained personnel is an extremely useful adjunct to a PAD program. Points-of-contact ensure that their site’s AEDs are inspected monthly and are rescue-ready, and the monthly inspection is documented online in AEDcheck. AEDcheck captures each deployment of an AED; tracks the expiration dates of each AED’s pads and batteries so that they may be replaced as necessary; maintains service records for all AEDs; keeps inventory records of AEDs and related parts and supplies; documents physician oversight; and tracks wall box installation/remediation in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including access to photographic records, as required by the US Department of Justice.
