Henderson County has implemented the Adopt a dog, Train a dog, Retain a dog (ATR) Program to reduce the number of dogs surrendered to the county’s shelter due to behavioral issues or incompatibility with the household. By increasing owner retention, our positive training sessions have contributed to the county’s continuing decrease in shelter intakes, which means a decrease in euthanasia. Clinics offer individual assistance with specific issues. Classes are group sessions that teach the attendees how to train and manage their dog’s behavior. Sessions are offered at various times to meet the needs of all county residents. Consultations are provided to those who cannot attend a regular session. Clinics, classes, and consultations are designed to help owners understand their role and responsibility for their dog’s behavior, set appropriate expectations, and develop their own training skills. Written materials on common issues have been prepared, and notes are routinely provided for those with less common issues. This ensures that all participants can continue training at home to develop the lasting bond between a trainer and a dog. ATR supports responsible dog ownership and good canine manners for the benefit of the entire community.
