In 2009 the Board of Supervisors in San Diego County adopted amendments to the San Diego County Zoning Ordinance to streamline the regulations regarding the various accessory dwelling types. The amendment reduced the number of accessory living units into two types, Second Dwelling Units and Guest Living Quarters. Additionally, the amendment made improvements to processing requirements associated with Second Dwelling Units and Guest Living Quarters. This action is innovative in that it consolidates several overlapping and confusing regulations into streamlined regulations. Furthermore, the processing changes continue to provide regulatory oversight in some instances while also allowing greater flexibility and allowances in establishing additional and relatively economical dwelling units within the County.
