Bernalillo County’s “About My County Activity Book” is designed to introduce elementary school students to their own county government. Not in a general sense but specifically to the people and multifaceted services provided by Bernalillo County. Our activity book tested the premise that when NACo provides a starting point, members should avail themselves of follow-through opportunities. Bernalillo County’s experience as documented in this award application reinforces the rationale for membership in NACo and like associations and provides a road map for other counties considering their own activity book. County Clerk Linda Stover is spearheading the county’s outreach with a book tour through the schools and is encouraging students, parents and educators to invite county officials into classrooms to participate in these lessons. Long-term measurable results will include students inspired to public and civil service, young people more knowledgeable about how their county government works, and a greater appreciation for the distinctions between Bernalillo County and City of Albuquerque services. Immediate measurable results include the embrace of the learning opportunity by students, educators and the community. Albuquerque Public Schools, among the top 40 largest school districts in the U.S., was moved to print and distribute the book to all 4th graders in the system. That’s over 6,500 students at 91 elementary schools.
