About Mat Heyman
Mat Heyman assists the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with a program that aims to strengthen communities’ resilience by addressing hazard-related challenges to buildings and physical infrastructure systems. The NIST Community Resilience Program facilitates use of a planning approach to resilience that emphasizes the social and economic goals and needs of counties and cities – and that builds on, and is integrated into, other planning efforts. Now a guest researcher and consultant focusing on solutions to societal issues, Heyman previously served as chief of staff at NIST after holding policy and communications-related positions during a 30-year career at the federal science and technology agency. He has assisted in multiple investigations of natural and human-caused disasters.
