About Derek DeGeare
Captain Derek DeGeare is a 21-year veteran of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office in Fairfax, Virginia. As chief of the Classification & Records Branch, Captain DeGeare helps to lead the agency’s Diversion First efforts. This multi-agency program offers alternatives to incarceration for people with a mental illness, co-occurring substance use disorder or developmental disability who come into contact with the criminal justice system for low level offenses. During his career, Captain DeGeare has served as the Branch Chief in charge of Inmate Programs as well as Alternative Incarceration. In these roles, he worked with the Fairfax Courts, Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and other public/private partners to improve inmate’s access to services and programs, thereby increasing their chances for successful community reentry. On January 1, 2020 Captain DeGeare was appointed as Sheriff Kincaid’s representative on the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and was recently elected Secretary by his fellow members.
