Capitol Hill Briefing: The Intersection of Health and Justice: A Look Inside County Jails

In early 2019, NACo and the  National Sherriff’s Association formed a joint task force that examined the impact of the Medicaid Inmate Exclusion Policy (MIEP), a federal policy that strips federal health and veterans benefits from individuals upon admission to jail – not upon conviction. The MIEP has contributed to the national behavioral and mental health crisis as well as increased rates of recidivism in our local jails. During this briefing, hear from key congressional champions working to amend this federal policy and members of the task force, who will provide insights from group’s comprehensive report.
