Stepping Up: State/County Partnerships to Reduce Mental Illness in Jails
Counties across the nation routinely provide services and supervision to the estimated 2 million people with serious mental illnesses booked into jails each year. State and county governments both play a critical role in providing effective treatment to people with mental illnesses and keeping them out of the criminal justice system and jails, but barriers often remain. In some counties and states, the combined effort to overcome these barriers has fostered collaboration to identify effective solutions that benefit states, counties and, most importantly, people with mental illnesses and their families.
This podcast explores ways counties and states have effectively worked together to develop and fund programs and practices to reduce mental illness in jails. The podcast is brought to you by Stepping Up: A National Initiative to Reduce the Number of People with Mental Illnesses in Jails. Find out more at StepUpTogether.org.
Stepping Up is a national initiative to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in jails, and the result of a partnership between NACo, the Council of State Governments Justice Center and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation. For more information, visit www.stepuptogether.org.
