The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on county criminal justice systems and budgets. In an effort to promote social distancing within jail facilities, some counties have worked with law enforcement and judicial partners to reduce their jail populations by as much as 50 percent.

Since its launch, more than 500 counties across 43 states have joined the Stepping Up initiative and made incredible progress toward reducing the prevalence of people with mental illness in jails. To build on this momentum, the Stepping Up partners are preparing to unveil the next step of the initiative.
The Stepping Up initiative today announced Set, Measure, Achieve, a national call to action for counties to publicly commit to goals that demonstrate reduced prevalence of mental illness in local justice systems.
