With more than a decade since a leadership program had been in place in Washoe County, and still healing from the sting of the Great Recession, employee engagement in Washoe County was in need of revitalization. The economic downturn cut not only workforce size by more than 600 positions, but also employee morale. In 2016, Washoe County Manager, John Slaughter, dedicated funding and staff support to bring the vision of the Washoe Leadership Program to life. With the blessing of the Board of County Commissioners, the Washoe Leadership Program structure of employee-led committees have launched successfully, and to date have directly engaged 100 employees in the creation and direction of the program, and touched thousands of staff by participation in Washoe Leadership Program activities and events.
