As the largest water and sewer utility in the southeastern United States, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) serves nearly 2.3 million residents and thousands of visitors daily. To continue to fulfill the department’s vision of continuous delivery of high quality drinking water and wastewater services in compliance with all regulatory requirements, WASD has planned a systematic and responsible Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). This plan will provide necessary upgrades to thousands of miles of pipes, pump stations and water and wastewater treatment plants that provide high quality drinking water and wastewater services. During the next two decades, the County will invest approximately $13.5 billion to enhance and upgrade WASD’s infrastructure utilizing state-of-the-art technology. With the thousands of CIP projects located within Rights-of Ways, a partnership with WAZE - the world’s largest community-based traffic and navigation application - allows WASD to inform residents of road closures and construction activity. WASD tracks CIP project activity using a project tracking system. However, too often project status updates can be delayed or simply overlooked due to the large amount of daily projects and activity. As a quick integration, WASD developed comment standards to be used with the WAZE mobile solution by our Inspectors. As they submit WAZE notifications, not only are we notifying our residents of potential delays, but we are automatically detecting potential project status errors and missing projects in our GIS. This information is automatically submitted to project managers so they can update their projects.
