The Department of General Services (DGS), Division of Fleet Management Services (DFMS) is focused on improving vehicle down time. Body damage to lower skirts and side body panels, have in the past, resulted in taking a transit bus out of circulation for extended periods of time at excess cost. An analysis of the prior repair process showed that replacing damaged panels using remote vendors impacted not only down time, but was costly due to shipping charges. DFMS was tasked with finding an economical resolution to the excessive downtime and very expensive cost associated with the repair and replacement of the lower skirt and side body panels on fleet Transit buses.DFMS recently began a restoration project with a local Transit Bus, Heavy Equipment Collision Center. The goal was to eliminate the excessive down time our Transit buses were experiencing when they were involved in minor accidents. The most common damage was to the lower panels on the bus, which required ordering new replacement panels. This program sends the damaged panel to the Collision Center for repair and restoration. Not only was down time reduced from weeks to days, but the cost to the County decreased by 60%.
