About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

As many states are requiring county employees to pass certain tests and qualifications, local governments are creating programs to help their employees pass state tests. The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department (MCESD) has developed a comprehensive training program to provide all new employees the knowledge necessary to pass the Arizona Registered Sanitarian (RS) state-mandated exam. This new training program not only focuses on the specific job tasks that MCESD employees will be responsible for but also be cross trained in other environmental health related programs to enable them to obtain professional certification. Ever since the program’s inception and implementation, the passing rate of newly hired Environmental Health Specialists (EHS) on the first attempt increased from 36% in 2007 to 92% in 2011, with 100% of employees passing during their first year.
