The For-Hire Transportation Division of the Sustainability, Planning Economic Enhancement Department (SPEED) is responsible for enforcing the various for-hire ordinances contained in the Code of Miami-Dade County. One of the responsibilities of the department as outlined in the Code is to develop and implement, in corporation with the industry, service expansion and improvements of the local taxi service. In an effort to improve taxicab services to the visitors and residents of Miami-Dade County, the department established a Taxicab Stand Development Program to increase the number of taxicab stands available to citizens. Taxicabs provide an important transportation service in Miami-Dade County and taxicab stands provide a convenient and visible location for members of the public to obtain cab services, and provide taxicabs a designated location from which they can serve the public. The primary goal of the program is to identify locations within Miami-Dade County that would benefit from the establishment of a taxicab stand. Since the implementation of the program in 2008, 122 new taxicab stands with 230 parking spaces have been established countywide resulting in, among other things, a reduction in traffic congestion, fuel consumption and the overall carbon footprint by taxi drivers looking for fares and providing a safe location for passengers desiring to wait.
