About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

Task-oriented cross training is intended to promote efficiency by reducing the number of times multiple inspectors need to visit a job site to perform basic inspection tasks primarily associated with the most common stand-alone trade permits. The initial emphasis was placed on electrical and mechanical inspections required for HVAC replacements at one and two family dwellings. In a typical month the Inspections Division will make over 500 electrical and mechanical site visits associated with HVAC replacements. Other areas identified as potential subjects for targeted cross training include plumbing and fuel gas piping inspections for replacement of gas fired equipment including heating units and water heaters. Having a single inspector make the inspection makes coordination between the contractor, homeowner, and inspector much more efficient. The result is greater customer satisfaction, faster service and a more efficient inspections team. This in turn will save New Hanover County in both employee salaries and fuel reimbursement.
