About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

Prince William County Government created and implemented a Supervisor Equivalency Credit Program (SECP) to provide an opportunity for employees without supervisory experience to compete for management positions and advance their careers within the county. The program is comprised of 16 weekly, four-hour classes delivered by in-house instructors and purchased materials developed for County government. We run two cohorts each year with 30-36 people, with a waiting list per cohort. To date, 66 employees have completed the SECP as members of Cohorts 1 and 2. Cohort 3 is currently underway with 31 participants. Of the 12 program graduates from Cohorts 1 and 2 have who have been interviewed for supervisory positions, 11 have been promoted into those roles. The program is a creative in-house solution to the long-standing challenges of career progression for employees who do not have supervisory experience. This program fosters talent retention, and ultimately provides skilled supervisory resources to better serve the community and organization.
