At a time when we often quote these words “the new normal,” the pandemic hit summer intern programs across the U.S. in 2020, leaving many students without extended summer activities to build their college applications and career foundations. Instead of accepting defeat to the new normal, the County of Alameda Information Technology Department (ITD) transformed the annual Student Intern Program (SIP) into a hybrid work model in the Summer of 2021. This transition has allowed ITD to continue with our mission to encourage students to follow a career in STEM while also giving them real-world projects that benefit internal County services and the constituents we serve.
